Budapest, 2012 - eighth ECCB Conference

Attendees of the 8th ECCB Conference, Budapest

The 8th Conference of the European Committee for Conservation of Bryophytes was held in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest from 18th to 21st April 2012.

69 bryologists participated on the meeting from 22 European countries (Albania, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia. Lithuania, Montenegro, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey) and even Canada and India were represented in the conference. During the meeting 23 oral presentations and 29 posters were presented.

Two days were dedicated for excursions. On 20th April Vértes and Gerecse Mts were visited. In Vértes Mts Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests, thermophylous oak forests, open dolomite rocky grasslands and rocky steppes and were visited with threatened species like Asterella saccata, Anomodon rostratus. In Gerecse Mts a limestone rocky grassland were explored searching for the threatened Pyramidula tetrgona. On 21st April the first the Great Hungarian Plain was visited; saline grasslands in the Danube-Tisza Interfluve with characteristic species, like Entosthodon hungaricus and sandy grasslands. Then loess cliffs along the Danube completed the program with characteristic rare species e.g. Hilpertia velenovskyi, Tortula brevissima, Crossidium crassinerve.

2007, Cluj-Napoca - seventh ECCB Conference

The 7th conference of the European Committee for Conservation of Bryophytes was held at the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca from 2nd to 4th September 2007.

17 bryologists participated on the meeting from 12 countries (Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Great Britain, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Switzerland). During the meeting 10 oral communications were presented. The topics were the follows: Important Bryophyte Areas, habitats and conservation of threatened and rare bryophytes, and monitoring programs.

Then excursions were made in the Apuseni Nature Park. A full day excursion was dedicated to The Fortress of Ponor, which is one of the greatest and most impressive karst system in Romania comprised of three large, 300 m deep, forested stone circles (dolines). On the other days a huge peat bog area (Molhaşul Mare from Izbuc), Bear Cave and 1 Mai Natural Reserve (thermal spring with waterlily) were visited.

The meeting was closed with a fantastic Gala dinner in Chios Restaurant in the Central Park of Cluj-Napoca.

The 6th meeting of the European Committee for Conservation of Bryophytes was actually a BRYOPLANET conference, where ECCB held a Board Meeting. BRYOPLANET project, a bryophyte population and landscape analysis network, was funded by the Nordic Research Board (Nordforsk) from 2001-2005 to arrange scientific meetings, workshops and courses for researchers and students on bryophyte ecology in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The network succeeded in connecting experienced researchers' broad knowledge with young enthusiastic post-graduate students with fresh ideas. The final meeting of the network was in Bispgården, Sweden on 21-25 November, 2005 with the title "Conservation ecology of Cryptogams”.
