The 2nd Conference of the European Committee for Conservation of Bryophytes was held at the Institute of Systematic Botany of the University of Zürich, Switzerland from 4th to 8th September 1994.

56 bryologists participated on the meeting from 16 European countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and The Netherlands) and even Australia was represented in the conference. During the meeting 21 oral presentations and 18 posters were presented in the following main topics: the scientific basis of bryophyte conservation, the practice of bryophyte conservation and the realization of conservation programs. At the end of the meeting a workshop was organised in three parallel working groups dealing with the physiological, juridical and political aspects of bryophyte conservation identifying the problems and giving recommendations.

During the meeting the participants could enjoy a guided tour in the Botanical Garden of Zürich and a one-day excursion in Swiss Alps exploring threatened, rare bryophytes and their habitats. The conference was closed by a gala dinner in a restaurant on Zürich’s very own mountain, Uetliberg.
